With Social Security benefits enrollment, many recipients may also receive healthcare benefits from the government. You may be curious to know how this will affect you and we have third-party experts who assist us with getting you set up in this coverage. Learn more about Medicare and Medicaid enrollment in Charleston Social Security claims.
Medicare is the medical coverage that comes with SSDI benefits. It is commonly referred to as “the red, white, and blue card” and comes through the federal government. The medical coverage that comes with SSI enrollment is Medicaid, which is provided through the state which the enrollee resides in.
Medicare is primarily an insurance program for people who are older than 65, but is also available to those enrolled in SSDI benefits. At Jan Dils, we work with a third-party company that provides the answers to all a client’s Medicare questions. Notably, there is a 24-month waiting period from their date of entitlement for Medicare to take effect.
The date of entitlement is the first month that they became eligible for a Social Security check. Oftentimes, that date is in the past from when they are applying for benefits, but sometimes it is in the future, depending on how quickly their case is approved. However, most or all of the 24-month waiting period is usually in the past at the date they apply.
There is a monthly premium amount that is withheld from a person’s Social Security Disability check. Once they become eligible for Medicare, that amount will change each year, but many recipients will often reach out and sign up for supplemental programs outside of what Medicare covers, and that might cause an increase in the amount withheld from their check. The company of experts that we work with will help our Charleston clients make sure they are enrolled in the proper programs within Medicare, and help them with any supplemental plans if they choose to go that route.
Everyone’s needs will be a little different. Some people might need additional prescription drug coverage, and some people might need additional hospitalization coverage. Our partners can guide the client through that phase by asking specific questions, identifying their needs, and making suggestions on what would be most beneficial insurance plan for them.
Medicaid is another insurance program, this time provided through the state. A lot of people are familiar with this, even outside of SSI, because they can qualify if they meet certain household income limitations, even if they are not disabled. Many of our clients are approved for Medicaid even before they are approved for SSI, so they will not experience any change to their Medicaid coverage. The change is behind the scenes, with the government agency that is providing Medicaid either being SSI or not.
If they meet their state’s financial requirements, applicants can also get Medicaid through their DHHR office or through their local agency that provides these services. However, some states may make it easier to receive Medicaid than others.
When a disability forces you to apply for SSDI or SSI, it makes sense that you would also like to know what your medical care will be like. Charleston residents filing for Social Security claims can talk to us about Medicare and Medicaid enrollment, and we will set you up with someone who can explain all there is to know.
