Breaking Down How Social Security Tax Dollars Are Spent

The Motley Fool website recently posted an interesting article revealing how Social Security tax dollars are spent by the government, broken down by percentage.

As you can see, it appears the vast majority of the funds goes directly back to the public:

  • 74% goes to benefits for retired workers
  • 10% of every dollar goes to the survivors of workers – support for the spouses and children of workers who have been killed.
  • 16% goes to disability benefits, awarded to the people who can no longer work and have been found eligible for the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program.
  • Less than 1% is spent on administrative costs to fund the SSA offices, including supplies and employee salaries.

How can you receive Social Security Disability benefits?

If you suffer from a disabling condition that prevents you from working, you may be eligible for the SSDI benefits mentioned above if you can medically prove your condition will last longer than 12 months or could result in death.
