For many, applying for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) can be a confusing process. Recently, the Social Security Administration (SSA) made changes to their application system that now lets you apply over the phone without having to use a my Social Security account. This includes applicants who apply for SSDI, Medicare, and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
Beginning April 14th, 2025, the SSA is aiming to strengthen its security procedures to prevent fraud and protect benefits. However, these changes will not apply to people who apply for either SSDI or SSI. If you or a loved one are applying for disability benefits and are unable to make use of the SSA’s online my Social Security portal, you will still be able to finish your application over the phone without needing to go into an office to provide identification.
The only time you will need to go in person to provide identification will be for applying for the Retirement, Survivors, or Auxiliary benefits. If you or a loved one are facing constraints such as an illness, exceptions could be made by the SSA for in-person applications. The SSA is actively working on an updated process to make exceptions when needed.
Even if you or a loved one are applying over the phone without access to the my Social Security portal, you will still not need to provide identification on site. There are other options available where you may provide certain information by phone or mail. This change is intended to assist applicants facing serious medical problems or limited mobility in their day to day. By allowing applications to be done over the phone, the application timeline is also shortened significantly to get a claim started.
