Benefits Approved! What Happens Next?

What happens after the approval of benefits?

If you’ve been approved to receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits – Congratulations! Here’s what you can expect next.

Your monthly payment for SSI benefits has been set according to the federal government’s current rate. The amount may be adjusted depending on what state you live in and changes in the cost of living. It also may vary from month to month if you have income from other sources or if your living arrangements change.

If you’re receiving SSDI benefits, your monthly amount will depend on the average amount of pay you’ve received over your lifetime. It can also be affected by the current cost of living, workers’ compensation, and other variables.

Your dependent children under 18 will also receive a monthly payment. Your award letter will tell you exactly how much you will receive each month, and your dependents will each receive a separate award letter detailing the same.

Payments are sent and deposited into your bank account electronically and the schedule can be found here. You can also sign up for the Direct Express card. You may contact the U.S. Treasury Electronic Payment Solution Center at 800.333.1795 or sign up with them at www.GoDirect.gov. You can also sign up with a personal My Social Security Account.
