How are my medical bills paid?

This can be a confusing process because you are dealing with hospitals, billing departments, liability insurance carriers, and health insurance carriers. There is a misconception that if you are in an auto accident, the other party’s insurance companies will automatically pay your medical expenses. If the other party is at fault, then they are ultimately liable for your medical expenses. However, when and how they actually pay those expenses varies.

From the time you incur medical expenses until your claim against the other party settles, your medical expenses are your responsibility to pay. We use a team that handles those bills appropriately. We work with your providers to have your expenses submitted to your health insurance carriers. Your health insurance pays your medical expenses while your claim is pending and prevents your bills from going to collections and hurting your credit history. If you do not have health insurance, our team will work with the medical providers to see if we can negotiate reductions to your bills.

Our team will work with medical providers to offer Letters of Protection.

Once your claim settles, then we work with your health insurance carriers to make sure they are reimbursed for whatever they paid toward your medical bills.

Most health insurance carriers do not pay medical expenses dollar for dollar. Example: The ER bill costs 10K. You submit the bill to your private health insurance plan. Your health insurance plan will not likely pay the full 10K. They will pay a portion of the bill, and the remainder will likely be written off as an insurance contractual adjustment.

When health insurance carriers seek reimbursement, they only want to be paid back for the exact amount that they paid for your treatment.

Even if they seek reimbursement, we try to negotiate reductions to the reimbursement amount so that you receive more money in your pocket.

Insurance companies like to settle claims as quickly as possible for the lowest amount possible. They try to get you to settle for an amount less than what you are fairly owed. They try to get you to settle before it’s even clear how severe your injuries might be. Do not fall for their tricks!
