Why it’s important to stay in touch with your attorney

Stay in touch with your attorney

One thing that Jan prides her company on is continuous improvement. In fact, it is one of our core values. One of the ways employees keeps their skills sharp is by attending classes in the office taught by senior members of the staff, and experts from communities. Recently I attended a class which was taught by Lisa, our Case Development team leader, and a senior member of the Jan Dils team. While the class opened my eyes to a lot of new skills, it really provided some great reminders for our Social Security clients.

In the type of business we do, it is important to have an open line of communication with our clients. For the most part, this isn’t an issue for us. However, from time to time, we have a client that we aren’t able to reach by phone or mail. As a social security client, you may be wondering why this would be an issue? Well, the following story will illustrate why we need to get in contact with you.

Recently one of our social security clients had a hearing. We tried for weeks beforehand to get in contact with them, and we were unsuccessful in those efforts. We tried calling, sending letters and so on, and never had a response. We finally had to attend the hearing without the client. The judge decided at the hearing that the client was approved, but they would need to appear before him first in order to “get the ball rolling.” Well, many weeks later we were able to finally contact the client, and get everything finalized. Just imagine how much quicker this would have occurred if we would have been able to contact that client before the hearing.

So if you are a social security client of ours, or even going at it alone, here are some helpful tips to make sure that the right people can stay in touch with you.

  • Always notify your attorney or the SSA of your address change
  • Always provide up to date phone numbers for your attorney
  • Respond to mail correspondences from your attorney
  • If you use email, make sure your attorney has that information on hand

Everyone knows that we “don’t take no for an answer,” but we also go a step further. In addition to phone calls and email, if you need to get in touch with us, you can even contact us via our Official Facebook Page. Granted, we can’t discuss specifics via Facebook, but we can make arrangements and get updated contact information that way.
