Thousands of Chicco MyFit Car Seats Recalled for a Safety Issue

In a recent government safety investigation, an issue was found that resulted in thousands of Chicco MyFit Zip Air Harnesses and Booster seats being recalled. Following the investigation, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) flagged these car seats for recall after a series of crash tests revealed they do not properly protect children when used in a certain manner. Families are being warned to stop using the affected models of the harness and booster seat until further notice.

Crash Test Evaluations

Amidst these crash tests, it was found that when installed forward-facing with only a lap-belt and no top tether, the car seats were not able to properly restrain child sized test dummies during collisions. These resulted in the test dummy’s chest moving too far forward for federal regulations, greatly increasing the risk of injury for the child in an accident.

As of yet, no injuries have been reported while the car seat has been in use. Nevertheless, an immediate recall was made to prevent potential harm from usage without the top tether. Chicco also included a warning in its recall that the top tether should be used in every harness configuration for the child’s safety.

Affected Model Information

The recall has targeted an estimated 30,000 car seat units that use two model numbers:

  • 07079561970070
  • 04079561190070

These models were made between September 2020 and August 2024, easily identifiable by the 3D AirMesh fabric and LATCH system they use. If you are unsure about your Chicco MyFit car seat, the model number can be found on the label underneath the seat pad or on the base of the car seat.

What Should Parents Do?

Should a family find itself with one of the recalled models, it is recommended they do not use the seat in harness mode if installed with a lap belt without a top tether. Not all vehicles have the top tether, especially for models made before 1999. If your vehicle does not have the top tether, your child may have an elevated risk of injury in the event of an accident.
