Individuals diagnosed with certain mental conditions may be eligible for Social Security disability benefits if it prevents them from working. Unfortunately, obtaining these benefits can be tricky since many initial applications are denied and must go through the appeals process.
Since mental conditions deal with more intangible factors, this can also complicate the pursuit of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). Staying up-to-date on medical studies and research in these fields can be helpful. For example, a new report from Columbia University and Harvard Medical School suggests that the sudden loss of a loved one could lead to mental and psychiatric conditions that have the potential to dramatically change an individual’s life.
The study determined that individuals dealing with the sudden loss of a loved one were at a high risk of developing serious psychological disorders. This reportedly is twice as likely to happen in those who are 30 years of age or older, and individuals between 50 and 70 have five times greater risk.
Conditions observed in this study include:
· Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
· Anxiety and panic disorders
· Alcohol addiction
· Certain phobias.
All of these can permanently or temporarily impact an individual’s capability to perform daily tasks, including the ability to work. It’s also worth noting that, while most of the study participants didn’t develop any issues after suffering a loss, a significant portion of the individuals who did had no history of related mental health issues.
It could be helpful for people in West Virginia to be aware of this information if they too have suffered the loss of a close friend or family member. Instead of discounting certain symptoms or assuming there’s no relief or support for individuals who have PTSD and other mental disorders, we hope studies like this will continue to help people remain informed and encourage them to reach out for help.
