Changes to Start Dates for Medicare Part B Coverage in 2023

Medicare updates can make managing your healthcare plan difficult. If you are enrolled in Medicare or are considering doing so, you may be eager to know when your coverage starts. Read on to learn how start dates for Medicare Part B coverage are determined and the new start dates that will take effect in 2023.

What Determines Your Start Date for Medicare Part B Coverage?

The date your Medicare Part B coverage begins will depend on the time you enrolled. The Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) for Medicare Part B coverage includes the three months before, the month of, and the three months after you reach full retirement age.

If you enrolled within the three months before you reached full retirement age, your coverage will begin the first day of the month you are eligible. This start date also applies if you registered for automatic enrollment. If you enrolled during the month you reached full retirement age, your start date will be the first day of the following month.

Updates to Medicare have introduced new start dates for those who signed up for Medicare Part B Coverage in the last three months of their IEP.

Changes to Medicare Part B Coverage Start Dates in 2023

Previously, if you had signed up for Medicare Part B coverage in the last three months of your IEP, your coverage would start two to three months after enrollment. Starting January 1st of 2023, your Medicare Part B Coverage will begin the first day of the month after you sign up, expediting the process for receiving your healthcare coverage.

What If I Missed My Initial Enrollment Period?

If you did not enroll for Medicare Part B coverage during your Initial Enrollment Period, you can still enroll during the General Enrollment Period (GEP) that takes place each year. In 2023, the GEP will occur from January 1st to March 31st.
