New Report Reveals Benefits of SSDI for Low-Income Americans

Benefits of SSDI for Low-Income Americans

A recent report from the Center for American Progress spotlighted the importance of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits for Americans with lower incomes, also finding that the program protects 9/10 Americans if they were to suffer a debilitating injury or disabling condition.

Behind the Center for American Progress’s report was a former Deputy Director of Government Affairs at the National Organization of Social Security Claimants’ Representatives. The study discovered that, without SSDI benefits, the number of American citizens living in poverty would be approximately 4 million higher. What this looks like on paper: the average SSDI recipient receives $1,165 per month, a little over the federal poverty line for individuals, which is $11,770 per year.

Ultimately, individuals with lower income who face debilitating conditions benefit from having Social Security Disability as an option, especially since part-time or inconsistent work arrangements often don’t equate to adequate company insurance.
