How Does SSDI Affect Healthcare Coverage?

If you receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or you’re considering filing a claim for your disability, you probably have questions about how receiving SSDI will affect other benefits like health insurance.

If you are approved for SSDI, you will also receive Medicare. However, there is a two-year waiting period before you begin receiving it, though there are some exceptions. You will become eligible for Medicare 24 months following the first month you were eligible to receive a monetary benefit from SSDI. Many times, this is a past month, allowing for some or all of this waiting period to be absorbed in the past.

There are also a couple of medical conditions that may qualify you to be exempt from the two-year waiting period, including end-stage renal disease and ALS.

During the two-year waiting period, you may apply for Medicaid through your state welfare office. Medicaid eligibility would be based on your household income.
