Many of our clients ask us for tips on how to apply for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) online. But unfortunately we have to answer the same way every time: You can’t.

While applicants have been able to file for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and other Title II benefits online for years, those who wish to apply for SSI still have no way to do so.

SSI applications are handled the old-fashioned way, paper documentation turned in at a local Social Security office or by phone – even if you’re also applying for SSDI benefits at the same time.

Despite the fact that you can’t apply online, the SSA has a variety of resources available on their website regarding Supplemental Security Income. According to their most updated information, you can earn $733 or less if you are single and/or live alone or $1100 for dual income households to be eligible for SSI benefits. Their asset limit is $2000 for an individual and $3000 for a couple, but this number does not apply to your home, car and other exceptions.
