Beware of Identity Thieves Posing as Social Security Officials

Identity Thieves Posing as Social Security Officials

Earlier this month, the Better Business Bureau released a warning against emails that appear to be from the Social Security Administration or another government agency. These impersonators claim email recipients are eligible for another form of Social Security benefits and ask them to provide personal details such as Social Security numbers, addresses and other information that can grant unauthorized access and control of the email recipient’s finances.

In this situation and other instances, predators have been known to target individuals who receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits for their scams, believing they are extra susceptible.

Reputable organizations will never ask you to supply personal details like your bank account or Social Security number by email. If you fear you’ve unknowingly provided information to a scammer, your local Social Security office may be able to help if you contact them as soon as you have any inclination this has occurred.

Checking your credit scores can also give you a good indication if there has been unauthorized tampering with your finances. Look for suspicious activity such as new credit lines or accounts in dispute. If you strongly suspect you’ve been a victim of identity theft, report the issue to the Federal Trade Commission for the best chance of restoring your financial security.

If you are interested in applying for Social Security benefits the safe, legitimate way, there are three ways to do so: through the secure Social Security Administration website, over the phone by calling 1-800-772-1213 or by visiting your nearest Social Security office.
